The royal owl (Bubo bubo) is a sort of nocturnal bird which belongs to the family Strigidae. It is a raptor of big size, distributed between Europe, Asia and Africa. It is more common in the Northwest of Europe, but also in the zone that surrounds the Mediterranean sea, including the Iberian Peninsula. Its scientific name comes from the sound that emits, and since the Middle Ages it is known as owl in the bestiaries. Due to its majesty and its easy breeding in captivity, it is used frequently in falconry.
