Nopalea is a bushy plant which belongs to the family of Cactacea. Most of the species of this gender lack from nomophile leaves; the segments or cladodes in which it is divided are flattened, green stems with flashy leaves that are capable to ramify and produce flowers and fruits. They have two kinds of thorns gathered in the gloquidians (a sort of pillows) of the areolas (axillary buds similar to little protuberances, typical from Cactacea), some of them large and heavy and others short and thin with downy. Crown-shaped flowers born from the areolas in the edge of the segments. It flourishes once a year, and fruits and flowers can show different colours, from yellow to red. The fruit has a depht, thorny shell with a pulp full of seeds. The fruit matures when it becomes an oval berry with 5-11 cm long and weights between 43 and 220 gr.
