Heber Crespo Longás » Committee
The International Advisory Committee is a new organism created to ensure the correct dissemination of scientific illustration both for the Award organized by Illustraciencia and for society in general. This Committee is formed by professionals committed to scientific illustration, among which we can find different profiles. From professional scientific illustrators with a long career to outreach technicians who work every day to transmit information with veracity and rigor. Given this diversity, the Committee will be able to work both to evaluate the technical parameters of the scientific illustrations (rigor, technique, composition and style) as well as their communication skills for the general public.
Heber Crespo Longás
Medical and scientific infographist, I have worked during 16 years as an infographist for El País and its science section, Materia. Previously I worked in the newspaper El Mundo. My training as a biologist and biochemist has allowed me to disseminate science rigorously. From these media I have explained scientific news of great impact, such as advances in animal cloning, epidemics of Ebola, avian influenza and influenza A, the discovery of the Flores man, the nuclear accident of Fukushima, several missions to Mars, the evidence of climate change or the detection of gravitational waves, among others.
I don’t consider myself an illustrator, but an infographic artist. That is to say, more than a visual artist I am a scientific journalist for whom images are a tool to transmit information. Thus, I try to make complex scientific concepts attractive and easy to understand by the public. The aesthetics is an extra, but communicating the content is the main goal.
In 2017 I launched a scientific infographic project for companies, Fundamentium, from where I help companies related to health and science to publicize their progress and discoveries.
