Description

Vespula germanica, commonly known as yellow jacket or German wasp, is an Hymenopteran belonging to Vespidae family (the name of “yellow jacket” is used also in other wasps belonging to Vespula and Dolichovespula genders with similar morphology). It is originary from the Mediterranean zone, including Europe, North Africa and temeperate Asia areas. Nowadays it has invaded the East side of United States, South America (specially Chile and Argentina), South Australia and New Zealand. The German wasp has yellow legs which are folded when flying and black antennae.  Its body shows yellow and black straights. It is an opportunistic and scavenging predator with a varied diet according to the nest requirements.
