It has so many species as the vascular plants or mushrooms and 66 times more species than mammals. It contains more species than any other order in the whole animal kingdom., followed by lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), hymenoptera (bees, wasps and ants) and dyptera (flies, mosquitoes). The common names of these beetles is used as a synonym of coleoptera, but lots of them have their own common name, like weevils, woodworms, borers, ladybugs, cockchafers, oilers, stag beetles, fireflies, etc.

Els coleòpters (Coleoptera) (del grec koleos: «capsa o estoig», pteron: «ala») són un ordre d’insectes amb unes ales 375.000 espècies descrites. Té tantes espècies com les plantes vasculars o els fongs i 66 vegades més espècies que els mamífers. Conté més espècies que qualsevol altre ordre en tot el regne animal, seguit pels lepidòpters (papallones i arnes), himenòpters (abelles, vespes o formigues) i dípters (mosques, mosquits). El nom vulgar d’escarabats s’usa com a sinònim de coleòpters, però molts tenen noms comuns propis, com gorgojos, corcs, barrenillos, marietes, santjoaners, olivers, cucarrons (a Colòmbia), cèrvols voladors, cuques de llum, congorochos (a Veneçuela), etc.
